Agapanthus was kidnapped when she was only two years old, but she doesn’t remember it. In fact, she doesn’t remember her home planet at all. All she knows is Deeyae, the land of two suns; the land of great, red waters. Her foster-family cares for her, and at first that’s enough. But, as she grows older, Agapanthus is bothered by the differences between them. As an Exchanger, she’s frail and tall, not short and strong. And, even though she was raised Deeyan, she certainly isn’t treated like one. One day, an Exchanger boy completes the Deeyan rite-of-passage, and Agapanthus is inspired to try the same. But, when she teams up with him, her quest to become Deeyan transforms into her quest to find the truth―of who she is, and of which star she belongs to.

Review

This novel is unlike anything I have read. I think that it is a great testament to the imagination of a writer that I can say that. This novel really kept me on my toes as far as expecting the unexpected.
There is a lot going on and a lot to understand since you are diving into a new world. I think that Francesca G. Varela really managed to keep her readers up to speed by giving them just enough along the way without making them feel lost or bogged down with information. It really shined light on to the characters and world in general.
This was a sci-fi novel that really made me think on a deeper level than most Sci-Fi/Fantasy novels.

Review

Drama and Secrets in a Desperate Housewives esc setting, but with mystery and suspense along the way. I liked that this story was darker. It’s the first volume and you aren’t getting the entire story, it’s short, but there is a lot packed in. Over the course of the story, you will learn the backstory and get a solid foundation, by the end, you will be ready for Volume 2!

What if the job you took to stay alive might be what kills you?
Kade knows what it is to suffer. He knows what it’s like to lose everything and everyone around him.
His job in a Stormer Unit guarantees not just his survival in the decimated country of Azetaria, but his sister Meg’s. Even if it means facing the Numachi warriors baying for his blood, he’ll do what it takes to keep her safe.
Hadley is alone and surviving the only way she knows how. By hiding where predators won’t find her and scavenging enough just to keep her alive.
When desperation drives Hadley to search for her missing brother, she mistakenly accepts the offer of recruitment into the Stormer’s camp, only to be partnered with Kade and sent as a scout into Numachi territory.
The intimidating young Stormer may just know where her brother has gone. But can they stay alive long enough to find him?

Excerpt
Kade’s footsteps were heavy as he approached and stared down at her. “This isn’t going to work. You need to be wearing something lighter, or we’ll never make it to Lazen.”
Hadley tried for a weak shrug but could barely muster the energy. “What do you suggest?”
Kade raised an eyebrow, and a deep frown appeared on his face as he considered her.  He continued to stare at her as she sat, legs sprawled out on the ground. “The best I can come up with is cutting your clothing.”
His eyes narrowed as he searched the length of her. A bolt of alarm jostled her into thinking. “How much are you cutting off?”
Kade dipped his chin, his voice low as he spoke. “Enough, so you don’t keep fainting, enough, so you still pass for a boy.”
He reached for a knife and wore the slightest of smiles as he unsheathed it. “Let’s hope you have hairy legs then eh?”
Hadley’s lips split into a smile before she remembered she was annoyed with him for being so smug.

Most people make at least one really harebrained decision in their life. Just ask Tony Piza. Deciding he needs a “paid vacation” for a year after college, Tony lands a job teaching at a Catholic elementary school. Talk about the Moby Dick of miscalculations. His pathetic effort is making him look bad, crimping his love life, and leaving him feeling guilty. A new approach, fueled by his irreverent humor, makes him a hit with his students. But it riles the powers that be. A showdown seems inevitable. Whether he can survive it—well, that’s something else.

Review

This novel had powerful main characters and a powerful underlying theme of actions and consequences. It also has humor and wit and lessons about thinking about your life and what you want to do with it vs what you are doing with it.
I liked the way the author set up the novel and that he made sure to give the reader plenty of information so that they came to understand the characters, their pasts, and their problems.  One of my favorite things was the pacing. I felt like everything really flowed smoothly and led to an easy read.

J. F. Pandolfi went to Fordham University as an undergrad, then taught at a Catholic elementary school before attending Fordham Law School.
Practicing law certainly had its moments, but to call it “utter euphoria”—well, that was a stretch. Plus, the voices that had taken up residency in his head (rent-free, the deadbeats) kept insisting that he share his writing with the world. An award for his flash fiction piece, “Psychology for Dummies”, convinced him that the voices might be on to something. And so he called upon his fond memories as a teacher, which served as a backdrop to his debut novel, “Mr. Pizza”.
J. F. also briefly believed he had won the New York City Marathon. Alas, it turned out to be a dream, apparently brought on by an acute case of restless leg syndrome.
A staunch supporter of the fight to eradicate adult illiteracy, J. F. was accorded a Special Recognition in Literacy Award for his efforts.

PROLOGUE
COLE
Have you
ever been to a funeral where the preacher stands before the friends and loved
ones of the deceased and talks about how shitty the person was? How he fucked
around on his wife? Or spent his family’s life savings to feed his gambling
addiction? How about during his bachelor party when he snorted coke off a
hooker’s ass?
Me neither.
Why is it
that we’re fucking saints the moment we die?
You hear
the preacher say things like, “Oh, John
Smith was a lovely man who loved his wife and kids,”
when he should really
be saying, “John Smith was a worthless
piece of shit who fucked the underage babysitter every chance he fucking got
while his wife was busy working two jobs and raising his ungrateful children.”
And let’s
not forget that the deceased in that casket before you never even went to
church. Let alone knew the preacher who speaks so highly of him. All he knows
are the stories the blinded loved ones wrote down on a little card for him to
share.
He’s a fucking puppet.
I haven’t
read the Bible word for word, but I know the Lord says if we confess our sins
and ask for forgiveness, he will cleanse our souls, and we will be forgiven.
Poof. It’s like magic.
Now that
begs the question–what if you’re not sorry? What if you don’t care to be
forgiven?
No amount
of holy water could cleanse my soul, and I’m okay with that because when I
sinned, I understood that I would one day have to pay. We’re all going to die
eventually. You can be one of those people who bury your head in the sand to
avoid talking about it all you want, but it’s life!
Live or
die.
Heaven or
hell.
Angel or
devil.
It’s black
and white. There are no gray areas.
So tell me
… when you’re lying in that casket in front of your friends and family, what
are they going to think of you? Are they gonna believe that preacher who talks
bullshit, or are they gonna know you didn’t care if you were going to burn for
eternity?
I’m not a
religious person. Obviously. But I do know this. When I am damned to hell,
it’ll be because I fucking earned it.

Lizzy’s Kiss

Psychological Romantic Suspense
Date Published: November 21, 2018
 photo add-to-goodreads-button_zpsc7b3c634.png
Lizzy Adams spent the summer pining for Tyson Smith, the sexy security agent whose instruction at a safety seminar saved her life. Now, every man she meets is measured against the absolute awesomeness of the brawny black man with the soulful eyes, the baritone voice that whispers over her like a velvet caress, and a smile that turns her knees to jelly. Now she just had to get him to notice her.
Tyson Smith had a lot of respect for Lizzy Adams, the spunky teacher who freed herself from the clutches of a deranged miscreant who’d wanted to take her hostage. But his concept of her wholesome ‘girl-next-door’ image was challenged the night she showed up at a company barbeque dressed as a flirty cowgirl. Always the gentleman, he managed to keep his eyes off her assets as she strolled around the farm. His mother had raised him better, but there was no denying that she was every man’s ‘American Beauty’ fantasy. But the night he’d shown up at her doorstep to help her out altered their relationship forever. Between the fear in her eyes and the baseball bat perched on her shoulder, his protective side surfaced, and he handed her a piece of his heart.
Their whirlwind romance is threatened when a man from Lizzy’s past attacks her. Sam Clark wants vengeance for his son. He blames the jurors from Jason’s trial for Jason’s death and crafts a hit list. But killing Lizzy, the scrappy survivor, is harder than he thought. After Sam fails at his first attempt on Lizzy’s life, he resolves to kill her before he’s forced into hiding. He just has to get past the big, black man who appointed himself Lizzy’s protector.

Review

I loved how fast this novel was in its pacing, I thought that it kept me on the edge of my seat from start to finish. I loved how much action there was throughout and how the author didn’t shy away from making sure everything was detailed.
I liked the fact that we got backstory and plenty of descriptions of the world we were in, I could picture it in my head.
This story is well thought out and flows nicely.

He smelled
like home. Like love. Like promise and comfort, like passion and disbelief.
“What’s
wrong?” he snapped, his face alternating between joy and anger. “Why are you
here?”
Coming to
her senses, she extracted the thick envelope from her brief bag, looking him
square in the eye. “Legal matter. I’ve been instructed to deliver this to you.”
She used remarkable restraint in not peering around Gerald to get more of an
eyeful of Declan McCormick’s stately form.
Then again,
Gerald was an impenetrable wall of muscle himself, not easily subverted. She’d
need taller heels to peer around him. He did not move his palm from her arm,
and his touch infused her, a deeply satisfying sense of connection slowly
creeping along her skin, her breath quickening, his touch ringing bells inside
her that had been dormant for a decade.
“What is
it?”
“Read it.
You’ll understand.” She turned on her heel and started to leave, shaking inside
so hard she might trigger the New Madrid fault.
He glared
at her. “What? That’s it? Ten years and that’s it?” He pulled back, breaking
contact.
All her
anxiety faded, like an antidote injected straight into the heart, his words
kicking in, providing such clarity.
“Ten years
you chose, Gerald,” she hissed, mouth curling, throat seizing. “You do not get
to put this on me.” Grief flared in her, a burst like a fireball, and then it
turned to the ash of anger, a light coat settling over every spare surface of
her heart.
His
eyebrows shot up, eyes gliding away, his nose twitching and mouth tightening as
if holding back.
Squaring
her shoulders, Suzanne decided to make this easy for him. God only knew why.
“My law firm is handling the estate of deceased billionaire Harold Hopewell.
You’ve been named in his will.” She tapped the thick envelope in his hand.
“These papers explain everything.”
“Explain
what?”
“You’re his
heir. One of them, at least.”
